For authorsCalling all aspiring children’s authors!
We’re looking for bright, original and inspiring children’s fiction for our brand-new writing prize. All you have to do is submit a synopsis and the first three chapters and you could be in with the chance of being published by Macmillan Children’s Books.
Entries will be judged initially with the help of independent booksellers around the country – they have passion, expertise, an amazing knowledge of the market and most importantly a love of books! The shortlist will be judged by a panel of esteemed and very important people from the children’s book industry.
The winning author will receive a cash prize of £10,000 and a publishing contract with Macmillan Children’s Books. Your book will be published in a beautiful hardback format that will be available only through independent bookshops. Later on down the line there will be a paperback edition that will be available everywhere.

For booksellersAs publishers we know that independent booksellers have a direct line to the book-buying public. A book that you love and hand-sell to your customers can flourish in a really difficult market, and that is a very powerful thing.
Your expertise is something we want to celebrate and use in our decision-making, and that’s the whole point of this prize. The winning book will be chosen by you, but you can get involved at various stages of the judging process before then. When you sign up you’ll be asked to fill in a short form about what it is you like to sell, and what’s worked well in the past. We want to be led by you as we narrow down the thousands of submissions we’re expecting to receive. We’ll narrow it down to eight that we feel reflect what you’ve told us in the initial stages.
The next step is where your shops come in. We will send you a booklet containing excerpts from each of the eight longlisted stories, and you can request the full manuscripts online. When you’ve decided your favourite you can cast your vote online. We’ll give you some booklets to hand out to customers too, so you can get their feedback. We’ll also give you point-of-sale material to get people interested in the prize, and eventually the winning book!
You will help us narrow the eight longlisted stories down to four favourites. At this stage we’ll make the authors’ biographies and the excerpts of the books more widely available on the website for people to read, and really ramp up the publicity. We want you to carry on telling us who your favourite is, and why!
The winner will be judged by a panel including an author, an agent, a Macmillan editor and someone to represent the independent booksellers – all tbc.
The winning book will be announced during Independent Booksellers Week 2013 and will, once published, be available exclusively through you. We don’t know at this stage how much editing it will need, so it’s hard to pin down a publication date, but we will make sure to liaise with you so that it is at a time that works well for you.
